Full Blood Count (FBC) Test

A full blood count is one of the most commonly requested tests in medicine — and for good reason. It measures the cells that carry oxygen, fight infection and help your blood clot. Whether you're investigating unexplained tiredness, recurrent infections or just want a broad health snapshot, an FBC is a practical starting point.

Common questions
Everything you need to know before ordering your Full Blood Count (FBC) Test.
What does a Full Blood Count measure?
An FBC measures 14 components of your blood including haemoglobin, white cell count, red cell count, platelets, and the different types of white blood cells (neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, eosinophils, basophils). It gives a broad overview of your blood health and is one of the most commonly requested tests in medicine.
Who should consider a Full Blood Count?
An FBC is useful for:
Anyone experiencing unexplained tiredness or fatigue
Those with recurrent infections
People noticing unusual bruising or bleeding
Anyone wanting a general health baseline
Do I need to fast for a Full Blood Count?
No fasting is required. You can eat and drink normally before this test.
What can abnormal FBC results indicate?
Results outside the normal range can point to anaemia, infection, inflammation, clotting disorders or other conditions. A single abnormal reading does not diagnose a specific condition on its own. Your GP report will explain what your results mean and advise on any next steps.
How will I receive my results?
Secure online results with a GP-written explanation from Brooksby Medical in 2 to 3 working days.
