Liver Function Blood Test

Your liver handles over 500 functions - from filtering toxins and processing medications to producing bile and regulating cholesterol. This panel checks the key enzymes and proteins that flag early liver stress, even when you feel completely well. Particularly worth considering if you drink regularly, take long-term medication, or have a family history of liver disease.

Common questions
Everything you need to know before ordering your Liver Function Blood Test.
What does the Liver Function Blood Test measure?
This test checks 8 key markers of liver health: ALT, AST, Alkaline Phosphatase, Gamma GT (GGT), Bilirubin, Albumin, Total Protein and Globulin. Together they show how well your liver is processing waste, producing proteins and handling enzymes. Abnormalities can appear long before you notice any symptoms.
Who should consider a liver function test?
This test is useful for:
Anyone who drinks alcohol regularly
Those taking long-term medication (statins, painkillers, antibiotics)
People with a family history of liver disease
Anyone experiencing unexplained fatigue, nausea or abdominal discomfort
Those wanting a routine health baseline
Do I need to fast for a liver function test?
No fasting is required. You can eat and drink normally before this test. Stay well hydrated for an easier blood draw.
What can cause abnormal liver results?
Raised liver enzymes can be caused by alcohol, medications, fatty liver disease, viral hepatitis, autoimmune conditions and obesity. Mildly raised results are common and do not always indicate serious disease. Your GP report will explain what your results mean in context and whether further investigation is needed.
How will I receive my results?
Secure online results with a GP-written explanation from Brooksby Medical in 2 to 3 working days.
